Vladik is the long-awaited and only child in the family. He was born at 39 weeks’ gestation via cesarean section due to a transverse fetal position, weighing 3,580 grams and measuring 52 centimeters in length. He scored 8/9 on the Apgar scale. On the fifth day, he was discharged from the maternity hospital. Then they noticed that the child was inactive, had difficulty holding his head up, didn’t want to lie on his tummy, and cried. At the appropriate age, he didn’t sit up, didn’t try to crawl, or stand up. A neurologist diagnosed him with “perinatal encephalopathy.” He also had increased muscle tone. It was hard to believe, but at 1 year and 3 months, he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy—spastic diplegia, GMFCS Level 3—and was subsequently registered as disabled.
In late 2021, following a consultation with a neurosurgeon, spinal surgery was recommended—selective dorsal rhizotomy—which was performed in March 2022. Following the surgery, muscle tone in his legs decreased noticeably, and the child began standing on his heels, whereas previously he had walked only on his toes. A course of rehabilitation was then prescribed, which yielded very good results: Vladik took his first independent steps, learned to step over obstacles, and sit down and stand up on his own. But this is not enough: to start walking independently, constant, long-term work in this direction is needed.
The Foundation would like to thank all the caring people who helped us support Vladislav on his difficult journey to recovery.
